#23 The Man Who Laughs (1928)

The Man Who Laughs, commonly referred to as 'the film that inspired the look of the Joker' is a 1928 German silent film starring Horror icon Conrad Veidt as Gwynplaine, the titular man who 'laughs'. With Joker: Folie a Deux hitting cinemas soon we figured now was a better time than any to cover this 'essential' silent classic from Universal Studios, but today we'll be asking whether this film really is as essential as its reputation lead us to believe. The directorial debut of the legendary Sidney Lumet, the 1957 legal drama stars Henry Fonda, Lee J Cobb, Joseph Sweeney, EG Marshall, Martin Balsam and more and the plot is simple, its murder in the first degree, what verdict will these 12 men come to as they must decide whether to send a young man to the electric chair. #21 Psycho (1960)

This week we review a literal classic. Its Psycho. One of the best horror films of all time, arguably the most important horror film ever, directed by a man we know all too well on The Golden Hour Film Podcast, Alfred Hitchcock. It stars Janet Leigh, Anthony Perkins, Vera Miles, John Gavin & Martin Balsam. It has one of horrors best ever scores from Bernard Hermann, one of the best locations in the Bates Motel and some of its best characters in Marion Crain, Norman Bates, Sam Loomis & Lila Crain. #20 Gone With The Wind (1939)

This week its Gone With the Wind, the highest grossing movie ever made (adjusted for inflation of course); it won countless Academy Awards with the likes of Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Olivia De Havilland & Hattie McDaniel all starring. It was (eventually) directed by Victor Fleming & was a raging success for producer David O Selznick. The lads dont entirely agree on this one so we hope you enjoy! Sweet Smell of Success is a 1957 film noir about a shady newspaper columnist JJ Hunsecker (Burt Lancaster) who employs press agent Sydney Falco (Tony Curtis) to end the relationship between JJs sister Suzie (Susan Harrison) and local Jazz player Steve Dallas (Martin Milner). Its an underrated gem from the 1950s directed by the equally underrated Alexander Mackendrick (The Ladykillers), and this week Harry & Shane will discuss what they think of the film on The golden Hour Film Podcast: Film Club.
